Krug Clos D’Ambonnay 2002 75cl

In 1991, just two years after Olivier joined Krug, a Clos surrounded by a protective wall since 1766 was found in Ambonnay, Krug’s favourite village and largest source of Pinot Noir. The tiny 0.68-hectare site was purchased in 1994 and the first vintage was produced in 1995. Kept an absolute secret until its release in 2007, Olivier revealed: “We even kept it a secret from Moët for some years!” Clos d’Ambonnay is an extremely rare and exclusive champagne produced only in the very best vintages. Just 4743 bottles and 240 magnums of Clos d’Ambonnay were produced in 2002, each individually numbered.

Each bottle of Krug Clos d’Ambonnay 2002 has a Krug ID on the back label which enables you to discover the story of that very bottle. You can do so using the smartphone App or on the Krug website.

Weather: The climate of the year 2002 was generous, consistently mild and relatively dry. The high point of this exceptionally clement year was its long summer of warm days and cool nights that offered the ideal conditions for grapes maturation. The harvest at Krug’s Clos d’Ambonnay took place in one day on September 21st and afforded grapes in excellent condition and fine health.

Krug Clos d’Ambonnay 2002 may be enjoyed with flavoursome meat dishes such as a spiced lamb tajine, roasted duck breast of rib of beef. It can also pair wonderfully with the smoky flavours of char-grilled vegetables or chestnuts roasted over an open fire.

The 2002 Clos d’Ambonnay is another spectacular Champagne from Krug.
In fact, the 2002 may very well be the most sensual Clos d’Ambonnay yet. Opulent, intense and yet light on its feet, the 2002 has it all. Hints of ash, graphite and smoke wrap around a core of rich Pinot fruit in a powerful, riveting wine of the highest level.

Chef de Caves Eric Lebel describes 2002 as a perfect growing season. “We had sun we wanted it and rain we needed it,” he told me recently. The Krug team captured everything the vintage had to offer, certainly to a far greater degree than they did with the 2002 Clos du Mesnil or Vintage.

Readers who can find the 2002 Clos d’Ambonnay and who can look past the price will experience a seriously phenomenal Champagne. That’s all there is to it.

What can you say about the rare and exclusive Clos D’Ambonnay 2002 by Krug?
For the privileged few who have been able to enjoy and savour all Vintages of the exclusive and rare Clos D’Ambonnay (95, 96, 98, 2000, and 2002) one can simply tell that no other Champagne has this exquisite powerful and lingering delicious vinous taste.

The 2002 is on par with my previous favourite the stellar and well known 1995. Utter precise finesse comes to mind like a perfectly engineered sports car, like a beautiful painting, like a delightful symphony.

On the eye beautiful light golden lively bubbles

On the nose explosion of wild fruits, raisins, brioche, and light spice.

On the palate: Oozing opulence, citric lemon, tangerine, and dark chocolate.
